When it comes to choosing managed IT services, companies often grapple with whether to go with nearshore or offshore services.

Whether it’s for call center services, data security, software development, or cloud hosting, companies have a choice for where they partner for strategic management of their technology.

Understanding the differences between nearshore and offshore services and the advantages and disadvantages of each can help your company make the right decision for your business.

Difference between Nearshore vs. Offshore Outsourcing

The main difference between nearshore and offshore services is location. With nearshore IT services, you work with an outsourcing partner in a neighboring partner, only a short distance from your business. Offshore IT services are provided by a company in a different country in a different time zone.

For companies that do not have in-house IT teams or their technology staffs are small, sourcing IT services makes sense. With competition fierce domestically for talented technology staff, many companies turn to managed IT services as a better option to fill technical needs quickly.

With nearshore or offshore sourcing, you can tap into talent that may not exist on your staff, leveraging the expertise elsewhere to solve critical IT issues.

Here is a closer look at both nearshore and offshore sourcing.

What is Nearshore Outsourcing?

Nearshore outsourcing means delegating core IT tasks to teams that are in a country near yours and, usually, in the same time zone. It’s a practical way to accomplish your business’ IT goals and enhance security without hiring in-house staff.

Advantages

Among the advantages of nearshore outsourcing are:

  • Better Communication. Nearshore outsourcing means it’s more likely that your partner speaks the same language and can more easily communicate with you about issues, progress, or needs. Many nearshore providers offer bilingual support.

  • Proximity. If you need an on-site visit or want to visit the vendor, the travel time and costs will be much less with a nearshore outsourcing partner.

  • Cultural Similarities. With a partner that lives in the same region, there will be fewer challenges with cultural competencies. Many of the cultural disconnects can be resolved during the negotiation phase, meaning fewer challenges once work starts.

  • Easier Compliance and Audits. A nearshore partner is more likely to be familiar with data compliance and other critical regulations that are essential to maintain compliance and pass security audits.

  • Lower IP Risk. Nearshore partners mean less risk to your intellectual property, with laws that are more in alignment and protect your products and services.

Disadvantages

While the advantages are considerable, there are some disadvantages to using nearshore outsourcing:

  • Higher Costs. While nearshoring costs are typically less than in-hour or onshore outsourcing, they are still more expensive than offshore outsourcing. Hiring developers or security providers from Mexico and Canada will certainly be less than hiring someone from Silicon Valley, but are still likely to be more expensive than from other regions.

  • Limited Number of Providers. Depending on the IT services you seek, you may have fewer options with nearshoring than offshoring approaches. This challenge can add time and expense to your search.

What is Offshore Outsourcing?

Offshore outsourcing means hiring an IT vendor from a distant country, often from a different region of the world. In the United States, offshore outsourcing often comes from Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, India, and the Philippines.

Advantages

There can be some major advantages to hiring an offshore outsourcing company for your IT, including:

  • Reduced Cost. Offshore technology providers usually are less expensive than those located nearshore. Wages and salaries are as much as 50 percent less than those located in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

  • Specific Skills. With a large workforce available, offshore outsourcing often allows you to fulfill specific talent needs. Investment in STEM education has led to a large pool of skilled staff located in offshore companies.

  • Off-Hours Support. With locations in different time zones, you are more likely to have access to off-hours support, if your company requires it. However, that means having live access during your company’s working hours can be problematic.

Disadvantages

Among the main disadvantages are:

  • Cultural and Language Barriers. There can be cultural disconnects and language discrepancies when working with an offshore IT provider. These differences can lead to frustration on the part of your customers and employees that can hurt business.

  • Privacy Concerns. Working with companies in jurisdictions that do not have rigorous controls or laws governing the use of data can be problematic. Loose controls on data can put your business at risk from regulatory agencies and, potentially, cause financial and reputational harm to your company.

  • Timing. Time zone differences can make it challenging to speak to leadership or get clarity, especially if urgent issues arise. The lag in communication can mean projects and problems take longer to be completed or resolved.

  • Lack of Access. Working with a partner around the globe makes it difficult to conduct business in person, such as face-to-face meetings or site visits.

  • Mismatched Values. Your brand values drive what your company is all about. You want to ensure that your partners share those values, which can be more challenging with different norms about work and business partnerships.
